meteorite info

I need info on a meteorite my dad found about 20 years ago. he's kept it all this time not knowing what its worth, I would really appreciate some info on it. It weighs about 14 pounds and it can't be cut with a hack saw or a torch. My dad managed to chip a piece off and the inside is a solid silver color...very shiny. it's the size of a large coconut and the outside of it is black (I am assuming that that is the crust where it was burned while sailing to earth). If anyone could help me out with this I would much appreciate it. thanks
I usually suggest that folks initially try to get someone who knows about meteorites to visually inspect the item to get an initial idea of whether the item could be a meteorite. If you have an image of the item then you could post a link on the List. After that, the best thing to do would be to try and have the item authenticated by a testing lab. They ususally require that a small portion be removed and sent to them for analysis. The Links page has a listing of testing facilities.
