Possible Fall in Bali?

Mike posted a message on the list this morning regarding a possible new fall in Bali.  A news article stated that ... "The fall, which occurred at around 1:00 a.m. (local time) Wednesday, January 2, 2008, was accompanied by flashes of light and loud explosions when it landed in the fields of Nyoman Miasa."

Meteoritical Bulletin 93

The world's most expensive mailbox?

The famous Claxton mailbox will be auctioned today in the latest Macovich auction. The mailbox, which was damaged by a meteorite in 1984, could possibly fetch up to $80,000. Not bad when you consider a new mailbox sells for under $8 at the local general store in Claxton, Georgia, where the meteorite fell. Here is a link to a interesting article (thanks Paul H). Update: the mailbox sold for $83,000!

More drama in Peru

It looks like the drama continues in Carancas. The Peruvian government is supposedly forbidding anyone near the crater and so the suspected mass still lies buried. Here is a recent article regarding a Russian meteorite team being involved now. What's next?

James Kriegh: 1928 - 2007

James Kriegh, a well loved and respected member of the meteorite community, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2007. He was 78 years old. He will be missed by all. Geoff Notkin wrote a wonderful story about Jim here, and The Explorer provided an obituary here.

Carancas Meteorite Expedition page

Mike Farmer has just posted a few pages on his site highlighting his recent trip to Peru to investigate the September fall. This fall is turning out to be a major event and the story surrounding Mike's trip is packed with excitement and his new pages have some very interesting pictures of the crater, surrounding area, and smoke trail.
